To achieve Colorado’s energy and climate goals, the CEO worked with other State agencies to develop the State’s Greenhouse Gas Pollution Roadmap (“GHG Roadmap”), which outlines an achievable statewide decarbonization pathway. The GHG Roadmap identifies hydrogen as a potentially important low-carbon fuel for beyond 2030, especially to reduce emissions in hard-to-electrify sectors.
To further evaluate hydrogen’s role in achieving Colorado’s energy and climate goals, CEO developed Opportunities for Low-Carbon Hydrogen in Colorado: A Roadmap. The roadmap identifies opportunities and recommended actions for the deployment of low-carbon hydrogen in the state of Colorado over the next 15 years, among them investigating regional hydrogen hubs.
It is clear that Colorado has a unique opportunity to develop and scale-up hydrogen in the region, because of its regional leadership in decarbonizing the electric sector using abundant renewable resources, its existing gas supply chain, and its strong intellectual capital (including its universities and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)).
In February 2022 to pursue these opportunities further, the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to coordinate, develop, and manage a regional clean hydrogen hub - the Western Inter-States Hydrogen Hub (WISHH). WISHH will work to compete for a portion of the $8 billion allocated in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act towards four or more regional hydrogen hubs.
Opportunities for stakeholder engagement and updates will be posted here. To keep track of announcements, follow CEO on social media, or check back here for updates.
